South Africa has allocated more resources to job creation than ever before. There will be more funds available to create work than ever before.
So why am I concerned?
1.) Because most of the ideas put forward are linked to the State. Ultimately, Public Works programmes and short-term contract-based employment is a tax burden or a Foreign Debt obligation, at least.
2.) Because Enterprise Development is the only sustainable angle on job creation. Private Sector entrepreneurship is key to ongoing business development. The ideas, knowledge and opportunity exist, often in so-called “townships” around the country. Finding and Funding them should be the priority, not equipping the next generation of Public Works labourers.
This is Africa’s Millennium. Let us seize the day – and the ED funding – and take our original produce to the world market.
